With The Girl with the Needle, Swedish filmmaker Magnus Von Horn (who studied in Łódź and lives in Warsaw) delves into a harsh depiction of poverty in 1920s Denmark. This frightening black-and-white tale draws parallels with certain aspects and characters (notably the circus scene) from The Elephant Man, David Lynch’s 1980 Gothic monument (photographed by the great cinematographer and director Freddie Francis, BSC). Behind the camera is Michal Dymek, PSC, the young Polish cinematographer (noted for EO, which competed in 2022). He talks to us about black-and-white filmmaking, relative authenticity, and the unforeseen events on set that can sometimes turn into assets for the film... (FR)

Opening Un Certain Regard competition, Icelandic director Rúnar Rúnarsson’s new film is about grief and lies. The young Icelandic actress and singer Elin Hall plays an ambiguous character, torn between the pain of losing her man and the impossibility of revealing him to others... Swedish cinematographer Sophia Olsson shot the film, which is almost entirely shot in Iceland’s capital, and whose iconic locations will undoubtedly evoke memories for lovers of this timeless city. C’est Michał Dymek, PSC, le jeune directeur de la photographie polonais (remarqué avec EO, en compétition en 2022) qui est derrière la caméra.... Cette année, le "Cinematographer-director Duo Award" a été remis au chef opérateur Peter Zeitlinger, BVK, ASC, et au réalisateur Werner Herzog. Depuis plus de vingt-cinq ans, ils ont travaillé ensemble sur plus d’une vingtaine de films, de documentaires et de fictions. Pour leur rendre hommage, le festival a projeté toute la semaine certaines de leurs collaborations. Vendredi, Werner Herzog a rejoint par visioconférence Peter Zeitlinger, pour une masterclass commune, au cours de laquelle les deux amis ont su témoigner du respect et de la complicité qu’ils ont forgés l’un pour l’autre au cours de leur carrière commune.

Dance First is Antonio Paladino’s first venture into feature films. This Berlin-based cinematographer had been, until now, accustomed to shooting commercials. He was fortunate to have been chosen by British director James Marsh, Oscar winner in the Documentary category in 2009 for "Man on a Wire". The film, competing for Best First Cinematography, portrays the life of Samuel Beckett, the renowned Irish playwright who spent most of his life in France. The black and white biopic’s cast features Gabriel Byrne, Sandrine Bonnaire and the excellent Irish actor Aidan Gillen (Littlefinger in "Game of Thrones"). (FR)

Dance First est la première incursion dans le long métrage pour Antonio Paladino, chef opérateur berlinois habitué jusqu’ici aux tournages publicitaires. Il a la chance d’avoir été choisi par le réalisateur britannique James Marsh, déjà lauréat d’un Oscar dans la catégorie Meilleur documentaire en 2009 avec Man on Wire. Le film, qui concourt dans la catégorie "Cinematographers’ Debuts Competition", est une évocation de la vie de Samuel Beckett, le grand auteur dramatique irlandais qui a vécu la plus grande partie de sa vie en France. Gabriel Byrne, Sandrine Bonnaire et l’excellent comédien irlandais Aidan Gillen (le Littlefinger de Game of Thrones) se partagent la distribution de ce biopic en noir et blanc. (FR)

Pour la troisième année, la remise des FilmLight Colour Awards a eu lieu à Camerimage. La cérémonie, introduite par Stephen Lighthill, ASC, et menée par le président du jury Lawrence Sher, ASC, a été suivie d’une discussion croisée entre les lauréats.

Le jury a sélectionné vingt-deux candidats dans cinq catégories. Les gagnants seront annoncés à EnergaCAMERIMAGE en novembre.
