Le dimanche 2 juin dernier, Imago (Fédération internationale des associations de directeurs et directrices de la photographie) avait organisé une première conférence en ligne "Art et Technologie : L’Arri Alexa 35", à laquelle intervenaient Evgenia Alexandrova, AFC, Alejandro Mejía, AMC, Art Adams, DoP et formateur Arri Academy, et Alfonso Parra, AEC, ADF. The Annual General Assembly of Imago (IAGA) – the International Federation of Cinematographers – was held in London from 14-15 February 2024, hosted by the BSC. Richard Andry, who represented the AFC alongside Jean-Marie Dreujou, Eric Guichard (Imago’s Controller) and Denis Lenoir (Board member), has written the following detailed and illustrated recap of this event.

L’Assemblée générale annuelle d’Imago (IAGA), Fédération internationale des associations de directeurs et directrices de la photographie, s’est tenue à Londres, les 14 et 15 février 2024, à l’invitation de la BSC. Richard Andry, qui y représentait l’AFC aux côtés de Jean-Marie Dreujou, Eric Guichard, contrôleur financier d’Imago, et Denis Lenoir, membre du Board, revient sur cette réunion en en faisant un compte rendu détaillé et illustré.

In late June 2023, during the Euro Cine Expo in Munich (cinema equipment trade show), Claire & Rob Sanders, the managers, gave six slots to the Imago Technical Committee (ITC) to exhibit their work. Among these presentations, ITC proposed a panel entitled “Artistic decisions in cinematography - To be burned or not to be burned?”

Fin juin 2023, lors de l’Euro Cine Expo à Munich (salon de matériel cinéma), Claire & Rob Sanders, les responsables, ont donné six créneaux au Comité technique d’Imago (ITC) pour exposer ses travaux. Parmi ces présentations, l’ITC a lancé un panel nommé en anglais : “Artistic decisions in cinematography – To be burned or not to be burned?”

La FNF (Association norvégienne des directeurs de la photographie) organise, conjointement avec Imago (Fédération internationale des associations de directeurs de la photographie), l’association danoise DFF et l’association suédoise FSF, l’"Oslo Digital Cinema Conference" 2023 du 16 au 18 juin. Une trentaine de sujets seront abordés, un accent étant mis sur les "Production virtuelle/Volume LED".

The "Photon Path" directly linked to the glossary has become a very helpful tool to communicate among committee members and has triggered the creation of an educational application. The Imago Technical Committee is happy to share this work in progress diagram for comment and contributions from the community. Arri, FilmLight, RED, and Sony have contributed to this scheme and the definitions linked to it. The ITC is in the process of obtaining approval from other manufacturers.

Le "Photon Path", directement lié au glossaire, est devenu un outil très utile pour la communication entre les membres du comité et a déclenché la création d’une application éducative. Le Comité Technique d’Imago (ITC) travaille actuellement avec les étudiants de l’Université des sciences appliquées des médias de Stuttgart pour concevoir cette application. L’ITC est heureux de partager ce diagramme en cours d’élaboration pour recueillir les commentaires et les contributions de la communauté. Arri, FilmLight, RED et Sony ont participé à l’élaboration de ce schéma et aux définitions qui y sont liées.

Luciano Tovoli, AIC, spearheaded the creation of Imago, the European Federation of Cinematographers Societies, in 1992. Its original constituent societies were four European cinematographers’ societies: AIC (Italy), AFC (France), BSC (Great Britain), BVK (Germany). In 2023, it was renamed the International Federation and now has 54 member societies. The thirtieth anniversary celebration took place simultaneously with Imago’s Annual General Assembly (IAGA) in Rome, Imago’s birthplace. I was invited to represent the AFC at this event.

Au cours de la IAGA 2023 d’Imago (Annual General Assembly of Imago), les 24-25 mars à Rome, Richard Andry, AFC, a fait la connaissance de son confrère brésilien Rodrigo Llano Munoz, dit Llano, ABC, qui avait été présenté en tant que secrétaire général de la Fédération latino-américaine des auteurs de photographie cinématographique. Il nous a fait parvenir le texte suivant où Llano présente la FELAFC.

Imago, European Federation of Cinematographers Societies (Fédération européenne des associations de direct(eurs)trices de la photographie), fut créée en 1992, à l’initiative de Luciano Tovoli, AIC, par quatre associations européennes de directeurs de la photographie : AIC (Italie), AFC (France), BSC (Grande-Bretagne), BVK (Allemagne). En 2023, devenue Fédération internationale, Imago regroupe 54 associations. Fêter dignement ce trentième anniversaire était couplé à la tenue d’une Assemblée Générale Annuelle d’Imago (IAGA) à Rome, lieu de naissance de la belle trentenaire. C’est à cet évènement que j’ai été invité pour y représenter l’AFC.

On Saturday 2, July, the Imago TC (ITC) gave a seminar at the Euro Cine Expo in Munich. Before giving a short summary of this seminar, I would like to provide an update on this international exhibition of cine equipment & technologies. The ITC was invited by Cinematography World magazine (curators of the Euro Cine Expo Programme).

Le magazine Cinematography World m’a invité à Munich, fin juin, pour donner un séminaire du Comité Technique d’Imago (ITC) lors du salon Euro Cine Expo. Une parfaite occasion pour partager avec l’AFC quelques informations et impressions sur cette nouvelle exposition internationale d’équipements et de technologies cinématographiques.

Lors de son IEGA (Assemblée générale extraordinaire d’Imago), qui s’est tenue via Zoom dimanche 15 mai 2022, la fédération internationale des associations de directeurs de la photo, qui compte actuellement 54 membres – dont l’AFC –, a procédé à l’élection de sa présidence et de son "Board". Le directeur de la photographie brésilien Mustapha Barat, ABC, est devenu le nouveau président d’Imago.

Xavier Gens’ Sous la Seine has been available on Netflix since early June, and has since risen to become one of the most viewed programs on the platform. Meanwhile, the director, producers and the platform are being sued by another screenwriter who is claiming to have been the victim of plagiarism. This suspenseful film portrays the intrusion of a race of mutant sharks capable of adapting to fresh water and swimming up rivers, and has benefited from the fact that the Olympic Games are being held in Paris this year to generate buzz. Nicolas Massart, AFC, was in charge of the cinematography of this story, with many underwater scenes shot in the large European studio dedicated to this – Lites, in Brussels. (FR)

À l’occasion de son assemblée générale, tenue le 24 juin 2024, la Ficam (Fédération des industries du cinéma, de l’audiovisuel et du multimédia) a procédé à l’élection de son nouveau comité directeur. Ayant à son côté 23 personnalités issues de l’univers des Industries de la création, toutes élues par les entreprises adhérentes de la Fédération, Didier Huck a été réélu à la présidence de la Ficam.

Selected for Berlinale 2024, Claire Burger’s Langue étrangère (Foreign Language) crosses paths between France and Germany through a first adolescent love story. Julien Poupard, AFC, reunites with the director (with whom he has already shot several films) to bring this story of sensual, amorous and political awakening to life between Leipzig and Strasbourg. The film is in official competition for the 74^th Golden Bear. (FR)

Carried by a dazzling cast, with young Mikey Madison in the lead role as a stripper, Sean Baker’s Anora is a captivating film. Its writing is both simple and precise, steering the plot in one direction only to better surprise the audience and ultimately deliver a powerful final scene that is likely to go down in festival history. Shot like great American cinematographers of the 70s used to do (Kodak film, 4-perf Scope, zoom lenses, and negative flashing during shooting), this cinematic tour de force is truly one of the major events of the 77^th edition of the Festival. Drew Daniels, who shot the film, explains that nothing replaces the thrill one can experience on such a film as a director of photography, making creative decisions live on set rather than relying solely on modern digital camera & post-production tools. La "British Academy of Film and Television Arts" (BAFTA) et la "British Society of Cinematographers" (BSC) ont récemment – 18 février 2024 pour l’une, 3 février pour l’autre – décerné leur Prix de la Meilleure Photographie. Oppenheimer, de Christopher Nolan, photographié par Hoyte van Hoytema, ASC, FSF, NSC, remporte le BAFTA de la Photographie et Robbie Ryan, BSC, ISC, est le lauréat du 68e Prix BSC de la Meilleure Photographie de long métrage pour Poor Things (Pauvres créatures), de Yorgos Lanthimos.

The AFC is pleased to announce its return to IMAGO – the ex-European and now International Federation of Cinematographers. The AFC’s return was unanimously acclaimed (except for one abstention) at Imago’s Annual General Assembly (IAGA), held on Wednesday, 12 March 2020 at Brussels. The AFC was represented by Gilles Porte, its President, and Eric Gautier, who is in charge of international affairs.

Organized by the Norwegian cinematographers of the FNF and the European Federation “Imago” in partnership with the Norwegian Film Institute and Nordisk Film & TV Fond, the 7^th Oslo Digital Cinema Conference was held from 18-20 October 2019.

The IMAGO (European Federation of Cinematographers) Annual General Assembly (IAGA), organized with talent by our colleagues of the British Society of Cinematographers (BSC), was held from the 13^th to the 15^th of February 2009 at the British National Media Museum in Bradford, a charming UNESCO world heritage “cinematographic” town of West Yorshire, England.
AFC was represented by President Remy Chevrin, Robert Alazraki IMAGO Board Member and Richard Andry.
After an introducing welcome from IMAGO President Nigel Walters, BSC, the Assembly discussed numerous points (25 in the agenda) of more or less importance.
