For his first feature-length fiction film, director Jonathan Millet proposes a truer-than-life plunge into the contemporary hunt for a Syrian war criminal. A film about spies in spite of themselves, but above all a gallery of characters with looks damaged by exile and the atrocities of war. Belgian cinematographer Olivier Boonjing, SBC (already interviewed three years ago with Rien à foutre, by Emmanuel Marre and Julie Lecoustre, also at Critics’ Week) is behind the camera to direct this thriller set between Strasbourg and the Middle East. This film is presented in the opening session and is also a serious contender for the Caméra d’or. (FR)

Adapté du dernier roman éponyme de l’écrivain Pierric Bailly, Le Roman de Jim (paru chez POL en 2021), interroge la paternité en dehors des liens du sang. Le tournage s’est passé entièrement dans le Haut-Jura, dans les décors décrits dans le livre. Ce sont les frères Larrieu, Arnaud et Jean-Marie – le tandem de réalisateurs qui tournent tous leurs films à la montagne, Peindre ou faire l’amour, Tralala…– qui s’emparent de ce mélodrame. Ils font appel à la directrice de la photographie Irina Lubtchansky, AFC, pour signer l’image de cette saga qui s’étale sur 25 ans. Elle nous propose un retour sur cette première collaboration avec deux réalisateurs qui donnent le ton au cinéma d’auteur français. Avec Le Roman de Jim, les frères Larrieu sont de retour au Festival de Cannes 2024, en sélection officielle Cannes Première. (BB)

Adapted from the latest novel by writer Pierric Bailly, Le Roman de Jim (published by POL in 2021) explores fatherhood outside of blood ties. The film was shot entirely in the Haut Jura, in the settings described in the book. The Larrieu brothers, Arnaud and Jean-Marie, - the directing duo who shoot all their films in the mountains, such as Peindre ou faire l’amour and Tralala – directed this melodrama. They called on cinematographer Irina Lubtchansky, AFC, to craft the visuals of this saga spanning 25 years. She reflects on this first collaboration with two directors who set the tone for French auteur cinema. With Le Roman de Jim, the Larrieu brothers return to the Cannes Film Festival in 2024, in the Cannes Première official selection. (BB)

Pour son premier long métrage de fiction, le réalisateur Jonathan Millet propose une plongée plus vraie que nature dans la traque contemporaine d’un criminel de guerre syrien. Un film qui parle d’espions malgré eux, mais surtout une galerie de personnages aux regards abîmés par l’exil et par les atrocités de la guerre. C’est le directeur de la photographie belge Olivier Boonjing, SBC (déja interviewé il y a trois ans avec Rien à foutre, de Emmanuel Marre et Julie Lecoustre, également à la Semaine de la Critique) qui est derrière la caméra pour mettre en image ce thriller entre Strasbourg et le Moyen-Orient. With the death of cinematographer Romain Winding on Thursday 20th July 2023, the AFC has lost one of its most lovable members. He passed away at the age of 71 at his house in Chambonas (Ardèche, France). Over the course of nearly 30 years, Romain shot, with elegance, sensitivity and simplicity, around sixty feature films and made-for-television movies. Here, we retrace his steps.

Avec la disparition du directeur de la photographie Romain Winding, jeudi 20 juillet 2023, l’AFC perd une de ses figures les plus attachantes. Âgé de 71 ans, il s’est éteint dans la maison qu’il occupait à Chambonas (Ardèche). Pendant presque 30 ans, Romain aura photographié avec élégance, sensibilité et simplicité, une soixantaine de longs métrages et téléfilms. Nous retraçons ici son parcours.

She developed an image for this drama that is both soft and realistic, contrasting and romantic... Frère et sœur is in Official Competition at Cannes for the 75th Festival. (BB)
